  Name: Garden Club of America (GCA) & Institute of Horticulture in the British Isles: Martin McLaren Scholarship  
     
  Purpose: Annual award to foster British-American relations through the interchange of scholars in horticulture, botany, landscape architecture, and related fields. The McLaren Scholarship allows an American student to undertake a one-year work/study program in Great Britain. (The Interchange Fellowship allows a Briton to undertake an academic year of study at a U.S. institution of higher education. See details at GCA Web site.)  
     
  Field: Horticulture, botany, landscape architecture, environmental studies, and related fields.  
       
  Eligibility: Citizens of the U.S. who have received a B.A. or B.S. degree recently. Preference is given to applicants under 26 years of age, due to the age limit on student travel vouchers in Great Britain. Finalists are required to attend an interview at their own expense.  
       
  Amount: Expenses for housing, board, tuition, travel to and from Britain, and an allowance. A McLaren scholar arrives in the summer to visit sites of horticultural interest. For the academic year, he or she may pursue any combination of practical experience and study, including study or research at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (or RBG Edinburgh) or a semester-long research project at a university.
